PETA delivers vegan hot dogs at Nathan’s contest

PETA Makes Presence Known at Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest
The annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island is always a spectacle, but this year, the event had an unexpected twist. Joey Chestnut may have reclaimed his title as the hot dog-eating champion, but it was the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) who stole the show with their presence outside the competition.
Before Chestnut took the stage to devour an impressive 70.5 hot dogs and buns, members of PETA were on the boardwalk distributing vegan hot dogs to passersby. While the competitive eaters were gearing up for the contest, PETA was challenging spectators to enjoy a free and flavorful Fourth of July with their animal-friendly alternative.
PETA executive Tracy Reiman emphasized the importance of choosing vegan options, stating, “Vegan hot dogs are delicious and kind, and who really wants to support slaughterhouses by buying what comes out of them. PETA encourages everyone to let freedom ring for all by leaving animals in peace this Fourth of July and beyond.”
This wasn’t the first time PETA has made their presence known at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. Last year, they planned to “bombard the competition’s spectators” and even brought a truck to encourage fans to go vegan. While their tactics may have changed, their message remains consistent – promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle.
Despite the distractions outside, Chestnut remained focused and determined to reclaim his title after missing out on last year’s competition due to a partnership with a plant-based brand. His impressive performance, downing 70.5 hot dogs in just 10 minutes, secured his 17th victory in the last 18 years. Chestnut’s dominance in the sport is unmatched, with seven wins surpassing the 70-hot dog mark.
While Chestnut’s return to glory was the headline of the day, PETA’s presence added an interesting dynamic to the event. As the hot dog-eating tradition continues, it’s clear that the competition isn’t just about consuming mass quantities of food but also about sparking conversations about animal welfare and ethical eating choices.
As the hot dog crumbs settle and the crowd disperses, the message from PETA lingers – there are alternative options that are not only delicious but also compassionate. In a world where food choices can have a significant impact, PETA’s activism serves as a reminder to consider the welfare of all living beings, even in the midst of a competitive eating frenzy.
