Philippine fighter jet carrying 2 pilots goes missing during mission against insurgents in southern province

A Philippine air force fighter jet carrying two pilots has gone missing during a night combat assault in support of ground forces battling insurgents in a southern province. The FA-50 jet lost communication during the tactical mission around midnight on Monday before reaching its target area, and a search for the aircraft is currently underway. Philippine air force spokesperson Col. Ma. Consuelo Castillo has asked for prayers during this critical time as they hope to locate the missing jet and pilots soon.

The incident occurred during an anti-insurgency mission against communist guerrillas in a southern Philippine province. While one aircraft involved in the mission returned safely to an air base in central Cebu province, details are scarce due to security reasons. It is unclear if the other FA-50s will be grounded following the incident.

The Philippines acquired 12 FA-50 multi-purpose fighter jets from South Korea’s Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd. for $331 million, starting in 2015. This acquisition was part of a military modernization program that had faced delays due to funding issues. The jets have been used not only for anti-insurgency missions but also for various other activities, including participating in major national ceremonies and patrolling the disputed South China Sea.

In addition to the missing jet incident, the Philippines recently conducted a joint air force military exercise with the US. The exercise saw two Philippine Air Force FA-50 fighter jets flying with two US Air Force B-1 bomber aircraft over the South China Sea. This joint patrol comes amidst tensions in the region, including a recent incident where a Chinese navy helicopter flew within 10 feet of a Philippine patrol plane over a disputed shoal.

As the search for the missing jet continues, the Philippine air force remains hopeful for a positive outcome. The integration of new aircraft into their fleet has been a significant step in their military modernization efforts, allowing them to enhance their capabilities in various missions. The collaboration with allies like the US also strengthens their defense posture in the region.
