US Election 2024

Philly Republicans urged to write in Dem former judge opposing Soros-backed DA

Philadelphia is known as a Democrat stronghold, with a history of Democratic mayors dating back to the 1950s. However, the local GOP in the city has come up with a strategic plan to potentially challenge incumbent District Attorney Lawrence Krasner in the upcoming primary election.

Krasner, known for his progressive criminal justice policies, is facing a tough challenge from fellow Democrat and former judge Pat Dugan. Dugan has garnered support from various Democratic ward committees, political stalwarts like state Sen. Tina Tartaglione, and union groups like IAFF and the Teamsters. His campaign focuses on a “geographic prosecution plan” aimed at cracking down on crime in the city while also rebuilding communities.

Critics of Krasner point to his lenient approach to certain offenses, such as marijuana possession, and his refusal to honor ICE detainer requests. His impeachment proceedings led by Republicans in the State House of Representatives were ultimately dismissed by a Commonwealth Court judge due to procedural issues.

Despite a slight decrease in homicides in 2023, Philadelphia has seen a significant increase in violent crime during Krasner’s tenure. His close ties to political action committees funded by billionaire George Soros have also drawn criticism from opponents.

Dugan’s candidacy presents a rare opportunity for Republicans in a city where they have been largely out of power for decades. The Philadelphia GOP is encouraging voters to write-in Dugan on the Republican line, with the hope of giving him a second chance in the general election should he not win the primary.

The city’s Republican Party is optimistic about the possibility of ousting Krasner and implementing stricter measures to combat crime in Philadelphia. By leveraging Dugan’s candidacy, they aim to shift the balance of power in the city and offer voters a viable alternative to the incumbent District Attorney.

As the primary election approaches, the race between Krasner and Dugan is heating up, with both candidates vying for voter support. The outcome of this election could have far-reaching implications for the future of criminal justice reform in Philadelphia.
