Pictou County athlete reflects on time at Invictus Games

A Pictou County, N.S., athlete named Colin Chabassol recently participated in the Invictus Games in Vancouver and Whistler, describing it as a life-changing experience. Competing in five different sports and meeting new friends, Chabassol, 40, is one of seven athletes on Team Canada either from or currently living in Nova Scotia. The Invictus Games is a competition for wounded, injured, and ill armed forces personnel, serving or veteran.

Chabassol, who served in the Canadian Army and completed three tours in Afghanistan, participated in wheelchair rugby, biathlon, indoor rowing, wheelchair basketball, and skeleton during the games, which took place from Feb. 8 to Feb. 16. He mentioned that being a part of Team Canada for the Invictus Games allowed him to reconnect with the camaraderie he had in the military, emphasizing the importance of the support system.

In preparation for the games, Chabassol bought a rowing machine and trained rigorously. He also had the opportunity to try out all the events in Whistler in March 2024. During the event, Chabassol had the chance to meet Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, who founded the Invictus Games in 2014. Describing Prince Harry as a down-to-earth person who understands their struggles, Chabassol appreciated the opportunity to interact with him.

Chabassol’s wife and friend Rob, both veterans, attended the games to support him. Chabassol expressed his enjoyment of spectating as well, mentioning the inspiring atmosphere of the swimming event. Despite having played hockey for 30 years and currently playing baseball, Chabassol found competing in front of larger crowds at a major event to be an “unreal” experience.
