Pictou County farmers’ market heartened by support after break-in

The New Glasgow Farmers Market in Pictou County recently fell victim to a heartbreaking theft, leaving manager Kristi Russell devastated. As she was setting up for a fundraising event, she discovered that products and cash donations totaling over $1,000 were missing.
The impact of the theft went beyond just the financial loss for the market. Russell expressed her discouragement, stating, “When you realize somebody has taken something that you’ve worked very hard for, it’s very discouraging.”
After conducting an investigation, the authorities determined that the break-in occurred sometime between May 7 and May 9. The stolen items included seafood, bagged coffee, frozen pizzas, mocktail beverages, chocolate bars, syrups, and travel mugs. It is important to note that none of these items belonged to the market vendors.
In response to the theft, the New Glasgow Farmers Market took to Facebook to share their dismay. However, the community’s support was overwhelming and heartwarming. Feed Nova Scotia, the organization overseeing food banks in the province, offered a generous $1,000 donation to help compensate for the market’s loss. Additionally, regular customers of the market contributed $100 in donations, along with words of encouragement emphasizing the importance of farmers’ markets in communities.
Ash Avery, the executive director of Feed Nova Scotia, highlighted the significance of supporting local farmers and markets, especially in the current political climate marked by trade tensions with the U.S. Avery emphasized that backing local producers is crucial now more than ever.
The New Glasgow Farmers Market serves as a platform for 150 vendors and farmers annually. The market is cooperating with the police in their investigation into the theft.
Overall, the outpouring of support from the community has been a source of hope and resilience for the New Glasgow Farmers Market. Despite the setback caused by the theft, the market remains committed to its mission of providing access to fresh, local produce and supporting farmers in the region.
