Pictou County NSCC student receives Livia Properties: Women in Trades award
STELLARTON, N.S. — Breaking down barriers and offering support to women in male-dominated fields.
That’s the goal of the Women in Trades Program award offered by the Rural Communities Foundation of Nova Scotia (RCFNS) and Livia Properties.
Vikki Freeman, a Pictou Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) student, received this year’s award for her work in her Automotive Service & Repair Technician program. Freeman’s passion for the trades, coupled with her commitment to breaking down gender barriers in her class, made her an inspiring choice for the award.
“I am truly honoured to be selected for the Livia Properties: Women in Trades award,” said Freeman in the Jan. 18 press release. “This support will not only ease the financial burden of my education but also motivate me to excel in my chosen field. I am grateful to Livia Properties and the RCFNS for recognizing the potential of women in trades.”
RCFNS, a key collaborator with this award, sees this initiative as helping develop sustainable communities and empower the residents in them, particularly women. As stated in the press release, Livia Properties and RCFNS are committed to creating opportunities for women in trades, addressing gender imbalances, and enhancing diversity within the workforce.
Penny Day, the executive director of RCFNS, said that this award coincides with everything that the RCFNS stands for by supporting community growth and helping residents reach their fullest potential.
“By breaking down gender stereotypes and encouraging women to pursue careers in trades, we are not only creating equal opportunities but also contributing to the overall development of our communities,” Day said.
As stated in the release, the award aims to provide financial assistance for women pursuing trades education and careers. Bridging the gender gap in underrepresented fields encourages innovation and diversity in the workforce.
“We believe that by supporting women in trades, we are not only promoting gender equality but also contributing to a more dynamic and inclusive economy. The benefits extend beyond the individual to positively impact families and communities,” Day continued.
