Pilot error likely caused Nashville plane crash that killed Ontario family, NTSB says

A tragic small plane crash in Tennessee last year claimed the lives of a Canadian family of five, and a recent report from the National Transportation Safety Board points to pilot error as the likely cause of the accident. The crash, which occurred on March 4, 2024, left no survivors and shocked the community both in Tennessee and in the family’s hometown of King Township, Ontario.
The pilot, Victor Dotsenko, was flying a Piper PA-32RT single-engine plane with his wife, Rimma, and their three children, David, Adam, and Emma, on board. The family was well-known and beloved in their community, with their children described as “the sweetest kids you’ll ever meet” by a neighbor.
The investigation revealed that there were no mechanical issues with the plane, but the fuel selector was found to be in a position that would starve the engine of fuel. This setting was likely the result of the pilot changing the fuel selector handle in preparation for landing, causing the engine to shut down unexpectedly.
The flight originated in Ontario and made stops in Pennsylvania and Kentucky before attempting to land at Nashville’s John C Tune Airport. As Dotsenko lined up with the runway for landing, he failed to descend and requested to circle around for another approach. However, he reported to air traffic controllers that his engine had shut down, and despite their efforts to guide him to a safe landing, the plane ultimately crashed alongside Interstate 40.
Witnesses to the crash reported hearing abnormal engine sounds and popping noises before the engine noise abruptly ceased. Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the scene, but tragically, there were no survivors.
The Dotsenko family’s untimely passing has left a void in their community, where they were known for their warmth and kindness. The Brampton Flying Club, where Victor Dotsenko was a member, mourned the loss of a skilled pilot and dedicated member of their community.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the report serves as a reminder of the importance of thorough pre-flight checks and adherence to safety protocols while flying. The Dotsenko family’s legacy lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved them, and their tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks involved in aviation.
