Poilievre dodges questions about repealing national handgun ban

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre faced questions on Sunday about his stance on the federal government’s handgun ban, a measure introduced to combat the illegal flow of firearms into the hands of criminals. Poilievre, who has been critical of the Liberal government’s firearms legislation, including their assault-style firearm buyback program, has not provided clear answers on whether he would repeal the handgun ban if elected.

Gun control advocates argue that restrictions on firearms are necessary to reduce crime and violence, while firearms rights advocates believe that such measures unfairly target law-abiding gun owners. In response to a rise in gun-related crimes, the Trudeau government implemented a freeze on the sale, purchase, and transfer of handguns in 2022, which was later enshrined in law through Bill C-21.

During a campaign stop in Surrey, B.C., Poilievre emphasized that the majority of firearm-related crimes are committed using illegal guns smuggled from the United States. He questioned the effectiveness of the handgun ban and shifted the focus to his proposal of imposing life sentences on certain traffickers and criminals convicted of firearms offenses.

Despite previously stating his intention to repeal C-21 and criticizing any form of firearms ban as “stupid,” Poilievre has been evasive on his plans regarding the handgun ban. Liberal Leader Mark Carney has seized upon Poilievre’s ambiguity on the issue, arguing that tough action on crime must include strong measures on gun control.

PolySeSouvient, a gun control advocacy group, has endorsed the Liberals for their commitment to removing assault-style firearms from circulation, banning large-capacity magazines, and addressing domestic violence. However, some police unions have criticized the Liberal policies as ineffective in tackling gun crime, attributing the problem to the influx of illegal firearms from the U.S.

The debate over gun control in Canada continues to be a contentious issue, with stakeholders on both sides advocating for their respective positions. As the election approaches, voters will have to consider the candidates’ stances on firearms legislation and their potential impact on public safety.

Overall, the discussion surrounding the handgun ban and broader firearms regulations underscores the complex challenges of balancing public safety with individual rights in a democratic society. The outcome of the election will undoubtedly shape the future of gun control policies in Canada and their implications for crime prevention and community safety.
