Poilievre reaches out to Ontario premier after Conservative election loss

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre Reaches Out to Ontario Premier Doug Ford to Ease Tensions
Following the federal election loss of Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative party, his team has taken the initiative to reach out to Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s office in an attempt to mend strained relations between the two leaders. This move comes after weeks of conflict within Canada’s conservative movement, including public criticism from Ford towards Poilievre.
In response to the proposed call between the two leaders, Ford stated, “I think he’s asked everyone across the country for a meeting. I have no problem with that. And I’d be more than happy to talk to anyone and work with anyone. That’s just what we do.”
The frosty relationship between the Ontario Progressive Conservatives and the federal Conservatives was evident throughout the election campaign, culminating in a public accusation from Ford during a news conference in Brampton, Ont. Ford pointed out that Poilievre or his team did not support the Ontario PCs during the election.
When questioned about the disconnect between the two leaders, Ford emphasized the need for communication, stating that “all they have to do is make a phone call.”
Apart from Ford, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also expressed tensions between his office and Poilievre’s senior adviser, Jenni Byrne. Houston highlighted the need for the federal Conservatives to reassess their strategies after consecutive losses to the Liberal Party.
Despite the challenges, Poilievre continues to seek leadership within the Conservative party. He recently met with the Conservative caucus, where sources indicate he appeared humbled in his remarks. Poilievre defended the party’s campaign efforts but hinted at potential changes moving forward.
As Poilievre plans to run in an upcoming Alberta byelection, former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer will temporarily assume the role of interim leader of the Opposition while Poilievre is outside the House of Commons.
The outreach from Poilievre’s team to Ford’s office signifies a step towards reconciliation within the conservative movement. As both leaders navigate post-election dynamics, collaboration and communication remain key to fostering unity and strength within the party.
