Pope Francis kept the tradition of visiting inmates during Holy Week

Pope Francis made a meaningful visit on Holy Thursday to a Rome prison, despite still recovering from pneumonia. The pontiff spent time with inmates at Regina Coeli prison, offering words of encouragement and gifting them with Rosaries and pocket-sized Gospels. He expressed his desire to be close to them, even though he was unable to perform the traditional washing of the feet due to his health.
During his visit, which lasted about half an hour, Francis reflected on the significance of being among those who are incarcerated. He pondered why some are in prison while others are not, emphasizing the importance of empathy and solidarity with those who are marginalized in society.
The fact that Pope Francis kept this appointment, despite medical advice to rest and avoid crowds, highlights his commitment to prison ministry and serving those in need. This year, during the 2025 Holy Year, special papal events for prison inmates will bookend the year, demonstrating the pope’s dedication to this important aspect of his pastoral work.
While Francis is expected to make additional appearances during Easter week, cardinals will step in to preside over some of the busier events. His recent public appearance on Palm Sunday, following his hospital discharge, was a moment of joy for the faithful gathered in Saint Peter’s Square.
This visit to the Rome prison on Holy Thursday was a powerful reminder of Pope Francis’ message of compassion, mercy, and solidarity with those who are often forgotten. His actions speak volumes about the importance of reaching out to those on the margins of society and offering them hope and support.
