Pope Francis rested during peaceful night at hospital following respiratory crisis, blood transfusion

Pope Francis, 88, had a peaceful ninth night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after experiencing a respiratory crisis and receiving blood transfusions, according to the Vatican. The update followed doctors’ assessment that Francis, who underwent lung surgery in his youth, was in critical condition.

It remains unclear whether the Pope was awake and having breakfast. He had a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis on Saturday while being treated for double pneumonia and a complex lung infection. To assist with his breathing, he received “high flows” of oxygen and underwent blood transfusions due to low platelet counts essential for clotting.

Despite being alert, the Vatican reported that Francis spent the day in an armchair, experiencing more pain than the previous day. Doctors have described his prognosis as “reserved,” emphasizing the critical nature of his condition given his advanced age, fragile health, and existing lung issues. The primary concern is the potential development of sepsis if the infection spreads to his bloodstream.

The images of Pope Francis greeting faithful during a General Audience at the Paul VI Hall and leading a Wednesday General Audience at St. Peter’s Square serve as poignant reminders of his role as a spiritual leader. As the world awaits further updates on his health, prayers and well wishes continue to pour in from around the globe.
