Pope Francis rested well after overcoming setback from respiratory crisis

Pope Francis is currently recovering in the hospital after experiencing a setback in his health. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Feb. 14 after a respiratory crisis caused by a bout of bronchitis that worsened into a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection leading to double pneumonia. Despite this setback, the Vatican reported that the Pope rested well overnight and is in stable condition, showing no signs of new infection.

Doctors have been closely monitoring Pope Francis’ condition and have confirmed that he is off mechanical ventilation. While he did experience a breathing crisis that required the use of a noninvasive mechanical ventilation mask on Friday, he is now only receiving high flow supplemental oxygen through a nasal tube. The medical team is optimistic that the Pope has overcome the respiratory crisis as he has shown no signs of fever or infection in recent days.

Although the Pope’s prognosis remains guarded, he is making progress in his recovery. He has been unable to deliver his weekly noon blessing, but he did send a message thanking his doctors for their care and expressing gratitude for the prayers and well-wishes from supporters. In his message, Pope Francis also prayed for peace in Ukraine and other areas of conflict, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and empathy for those who are sick and suffering around the world.

Cardinal Konrad Krajewski led an evening Rosary prayer in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday night, asking the entire church to join in prayer for the health of Pope Francis. The Vatican continues to provide updates on the Pope’s condition as he enters his third week in the hospital. Despite the challenges he has faced, Pope Francis remains hopeful and trusts in the Lord’s blessings even in times of frailty.
