Pope Francis slept well, resting as health shows slight improvement: Vatican

Pope Francis is continuing to show signs of improvement as he battles double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The 88-year-old pontiff had a peaceful night and was resting Thursday morning, according to a statement from the Holy See. Doctors have reported that Francis had breakfast and continued his therapy in good spirits.

“The Pope slept well last night and is now resting,” the statement read. More medical tests are expected to be conducted later on Thursday to monitor his progress.

In a recent update, the Vatican revealed that the kidney insufficiency that was previously detected has receded, blood tests showed a slight improvement, and a chest CT scan indicated that his lung infection is progressing normally with treatment. Despite these positive developments, Francis remains on high-flow oxygen therapy and his prognosis is still considered reserved.

Since being admitted to the hospital on February 14 after a bout of bronchitis worsened, Francis has been under the care of doctors for a complex respiratory infection that led to pneumonia in both lungs. This marks the longest hospitalization of his papacy, surpassing a 10-day stay in 2021 when he underwent surgery to remove a portion of his colon.

Throughout his hospitalization, Catholic faithful around the world have been offering prayers for the Pope’s recovery. A nightly rosary prayer service was held in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican to show support and solidarity for Francis during this challenging time.

As the world continues to monitor the health of Pope Francis, the Vatican will provide updates on his condition as they become available. We all join in sending our thoughts and prayers for his speedy recovery.
