Pope Francis, still recovering from pneumonia, meets with Vice President JD Vance on Easter Sunday

Pope Francis and Vice President JD Vance had a brief meeting on Easter Sunday at the Casa Santa Marta, as confirmed by the Holy See Press Office. In a video shared by Vatican Media, Vance expressed his joy at seeing the Pope in better health after his recent illness, thanking him for taking the time to meet with him.

During the meeting, Francis, who is still recovering from pneumonia, presented Vance with three large chocolate Easter eggs for his children, along with a Vatican tie and rosaries. Despite the ongoing health concerns, the Pope graciously welcomed Vance to the Vatican hotel where he resides.

The encounter between Francis and Vance comes amidst tensions over migration policies and the Trump administration’s approach to deportations. However, the official media release stated that the meeting involved a cordial conversation, reaffirming their shared commitment to protecting religious freedom and freedom of conscience.

Additionally, the discussion touched on international issues, particularly focusing on countries affected by conflict, political unrest, and humanitarian crises. Of particular concern were migrants, refugees, and individuals in prison, highlighting the need for compassion and support in these challenging circumstances.

Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, attended Easter Mass with his family at St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of Rome’s four pontifical basilicas. Following his meeting with Francis, he visited the tomb of St. Paul, a significant figure in Christian history.

Before his departure, Vance also met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican’s secretary of state, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the foreign minister.
