Pope Francis’ will shows simple request pontiff made upon his death

Vatican officials have shared the will left behind by Pope Francis, which details his burial request, hours after the pontiff passed away from a cerebral stroke that led to heart failure. The document, written in June 2022, reveals the pope’s unique burial preferences that differ from those of past pontiffs.

In his will, Pope Francis expressed his desire for his mortal remains to be laid to rest in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, a place he referred to as an ancient sanctuary where he had always entrusted his life and ministry to the Mother of Our Lord, Mary Most Holy. He specified that he wanted his burial to be simple, without elaborate decorum, with only the inscription “Franciscus” marking his tomb.

The will also outlined the specific location within the Papal Basilica where Francis wished to be buried, requesting that his tomb be prepared in the aisle between the Pauline Chapel and the Sforza Chapel. He made arrangements for the burial expenses to be covered by a benefactor with whom he had previously arranged.

Additionally, Pope Francis entrusted Mons. Rolandas Makrickas, the Extraordinary Commissioner of the Chapter Liberian, with the task of overseeing the transfer of his remains to the designated burial site in the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. He concluded his will by expressing gratitude to those who had loved him and prayed for him, offering his suffering in the last part of his life for peace in the world and brotherhood among peoples.

The 88-year-old pontiff passed away on Monday morning at the Vatican, following a stroke that led to irreversible heart failure. Dr. Andrea Arcangeli, the head of the Vatican’s health department, provided details of the pope’s medical condition, including respiratory insufficiency and bilateral pneumonia, as well as his long-standing health issues such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

As Vatican officials honor the will of Pope Francis and make preparations for his burial in accordance with his wishes, the world mourns the loss of a beloved leader and spiritual guide.
