Potential measles exposure alerts issued after confirmed cases in Calgary area and northern Alberta

Alberta Health Services has issued advisories regarding confirmed measles cases in the Calgary area and Fort Vermilion. In Calgary, individuals may have been exposed to measles at various locations, including the Airdrie Superstore and the Sky Castle Family Entertainment Centre. The highly infectious nature of measles has health officials concerned about its transmission.

In northern Alberta, an outbreak of measles in John D’Or Prairie has resulted in six confirmed cases. While all confirmed cases have recovered, the risk of the virus remains. Chief Conroy Sewepagaham of Little Red River Cree Nation stated that mobile vaccination clinics are offering immunization shots to the community to prevent further spread of the virus.

Additionally, there have been confirmed measles cases near Fort Vermilion in northern Alberta, with potential exposures at St. Theresa General Hospital. Alberta Health Services has set up drop-in measles immunization clinics in Fort Vermilion and High Level to provide vaccinations to those at risk.

Vaccination coverage is crucial in limiting the spread of measles. University of Calgary professor Craig Jenne emphasized the importance of vaccination, citing a decline in childhood vaccination rates in Alberta in recent years. Factors contributing to this decline include hesitancy, vaccine fatigue, and disruptions to vaccination programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health authorities are urging the public to prioritize vaccinations and seek information from reliable sources such as pediatricians and family care providers. With measles outbreaks reported across Canada and internationally, the ease of travel poses challenges in monitoring and responding to the disease.

While it may be easy to overlook the threat of measles due to lack of recent outbreaks, health experts stress the importance of recognizing symptoms such as fever, cough, red eyes, and a rash. Anyone who believes they may have been exposed to measles should stay home and contact Health Link for guidance, rather than visiting a healthcare facility while infectious.
