Premier, RCMP and health officer hold press conference on Manitoba bus crash

Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson will speak to reporters today about last week’s bus accident that killed 15 people and seriously injured 10 others.

The press conference will take place at RCMPD Division headquarters in Winnipeg at 12:00 a.m. local time, and Stefanson will be joined by Supt. Rob Lasson, Major Crimes Officer at Manitoba RCMP.

Lanette Siragusa, CEO of Shared Health, the coordinator of many health services in the province, will also be in attendance.

A minibus was transporting a group of senior citizens from Dauphin, Man., and surrounding area to a casino last Thursday when it drove into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer truck near the town of Carberry, some 120 miles away.

Shared Health said in a statement on Sunday that six of the 10 injured are in critical condition.

No names of the deceased have been officially released.

RCMP continues to investigate the crash. Mounties have said the truck was traveling east on the Trans-Canada Highway when the bus crossed south at an intersection on Highway 5.

Police say dashcam footage from the truck shows it had the right of way.

On Friday, detectives had not yet spoken to the bus driver, who was in hospital.
