President Donald Trump responds to Newsom’s claim he did not call him

President Donald Trump has fired back at Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom’s claims that the president did not recently call him, stating that he spoke to the governor for approximately 16 minutes on Saturday. Trump, while traveling to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, told Fox News on Tuesday that Newsom initially did not answer his first call over the weekend, but did pick up his second call, leading to a 16-minute conversation on Saturday.
During the call, Trump emphasized the need for Newsom to take action and put an end to the riots that had spiraled out of control. Trump expressed his frustration with Newsom’s handling of the situation, calling him out for not taking swift and decisive action to address the violence.
In response to Newsom’s denial of the phone call, Trump provided a screenshot of the call log dated June 7 at 1:23 a.m. White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung also weighed in, accusing Newsom of siding with violent rioters instead of prioritizing the safety of Californians.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump addressed the ongoing anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles during an event in the Oval Office. He criticized Newsom for his handling of the situation, stating that he had spoken to the governor “a day ago” and urged him to do a better job in addressing the unrest.
In a rebuttal post on social media, Newsom claimed that Trump did not call him or leave a voicemail in the past day. He expressed alarm that a president deploying Marines onto the streets would not even know who he was speaking to.
The riots in Los Angeles erupted following federal immigration raids targeting illegal immigrants in the city. Local leaders, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, condemned the raids and expressed support for illegal immigrants in the state. However, the protests turned violent as rioters targeted federal law enforcement officials.
In response to the escalating violence, Trump announced the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members to assist in restoring order. Additionally, the Trump administration sent in hundreds of U.S. Marines to address the chaos and ensure public safety.
Trump took to social media to defend his decision to intervene, stating that if he had not sent in the troops, Los Angeles would have been “burning to the ground.” The president’s decisive actions underscored his commitment to maintaining law and order in the face of violent unrest.
Overall, the clash between Trump and Newsom highlights the challenges of addressing civil unrest and lawlessness in the midst of political tensions. As the situation in Los Angeles continues to unfold, the need for strong leadership and decisive action remains paramount in safeguarding the well-being of communities.
