President Trump weighs in on messy Senate race in major red state

President Donald Trump has entered the fray of a contentious Senate primary race in Texas, the most populous red state in the nation. Trump has announced that he will make an endorsement decision “at the right time,” as Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton seeks to unseat incumbent Sen. John Cornyn.
Paxton, a conservative firebrand and staunch supporter of Trump, has accused Cornyn of being a lukewarm supporter of the president’s agenda. He has pledged to stand up for Republican values and support Trump in a significant way. On the other hand, Cornyn has dismissed Paxton as a “fraud” motivated by “vanity and personal ambition.”
Both candidates have garnered significant support from within the Republican Party. Paxton has received endorsements from Reps. Troy Nehls and Lance Gooden, as well as around 250 state legislators and business leaders. His supporters emphasize his commitment to conservative values and his willingness to take on the D.C. establishment.
Cornyn, who has been in the Senate for nearly 23 years, has the backing of top party leaders, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. Tim Scott. Since Trump’s return to the White House, Cornyn has supported the president’s agenda and Cabinet nominees.
The race between Paxton and Cornyn promises to be messy, with both candidates trading accusations and jockeying for Trump’s endorsement. Paxton has highlighted Cornyn’s past corruption charges and has painted himself as a true conservative champion. Cornyn’s campaign has emphasized his experience and track record of supporting Trump’s agenda.
As the primary race heats up, former Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is considering another run for the Senate in 2026. The battle for the GOP nomination in Texas is shaping up to be a closely watched contest that could have significant implications for the future of the Republican Party in the state.
