Progressive Democrat running for New Jersey governor accused of ignoring sexual harassment claims

Progressive Newark, New Jersey, Mayor Ras Baraka has come under scrutiny for his associations with alleged abusers of women and accusations of fostering a toxic work environment for women in his administration. Baraka, who is a top Democratic candidate for New Jersey governor, has faced criticism for hiring his brother, Amiri Baraka Jr., as his chief of staff, who was accused of silencing a woman who raised concerns about being sexually assaulted.

Sebrivious Scott, a woman hired through a prisoner reentry program, alleged that Baraka Jr. dismissed her complaints of sexual assault and discrimination, telling her to be grateful for her job. Scott claimed that while men hired through the program obtained full-time positions, she was left waiting for a response to her application. After a legal battle, Scott recently settled her case against the administration.

Another of Baraka’s brothers, Obalaji Jones, who served as a youth opportunity coordinator, was accused of sexual assault by Dannisha Clyburn, a former City of Newark employee. Clyburn claimed that Jones inappropriately touched her at a political event and attempted to assault her again during a children’s event. She spoke out against Jones, urging Baraka to take action against his brother.

Former Newark Councilwoman Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins also accused Baraka’s administration of widespread abuse, with many women allegedly pressured into sexual favors in exchange for jobs. Jenkins highlighted the abuse of power within the administration and criticized the lack of action taken to address the issue.

Additionally, Baraka has maintained a close relationship with Kiburi Tucker, who has a history of legal troubles, including charges of sexual assault and financial crimes. Tucker, who served time in prison, has expressed support for Baraka’s gubernatorial campaign, indicating a continued alliance between the two.

Despite the allegations and controversies surrounding his administration, Baraka has denied any wrongdoing and claimed that he is being unfairly targeted. After being arrested outside an ICE facility in Newark, Baraka spoke out against the charges, suggesting that he was singled out for prosecution.

As Baraka continues his campaign for governor, his associations with alleged abusers and accusations of fostering a toxic work environment for women may impact his political aspirations. The ongoing scrutiny and criticism surrounding his administration raise questions about his ability to lead effectively and address issues of misconduct within his circle of influence.
