Proposed discipline for Halifax nightclub on hold as parent company faces bankruptcy

The popular downtown Halifax bar, The Dome Nightclub, owned by the Grafton Connor Group, is currently facing potential disciplinary action in relation to alleged violations of the Liquor Control Act. The proposed seven-day suspension of its liquor license has been put on hold as the company seeks to avoid bankruptcy.

The company, which also owns other downtown establishments including 5 Fishermen, Auction House, and Grafton Street Dinner Theatre, is currently under Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act protection in Nova Scotia Supreme Court. With debts totaling $23.7 million, including over $5 million owed to the Canada Revenue Agency, the Grafton Connor Group is working with the accounting firm MNP as a monitor to navigate its financial challenges.

The alleged violations at The Dome Nightclub on June 6, 2024, include serving alcohol to a minor, allowing employees to drink while on duty, improperly dispensing liquor, and permitting disorderly behavior within the establishment. However, in the appeal process, the bar’s owner has denied these allegations, stating that staff exercised due diligence in enforcing liquor laws and maintaining order.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, the Grafton Connor Group remains committed to its approximately 400 employees and the valued assets of its various locations. The court has extended creditor protection until mid-October, allowing the company time to restructure and address its financial obligations.

As the situation continues to unfold, patrons of The Dome Nightclub and other Grafton Connor Group establishments can stay informed on any developments through official channels. The company is dedicated to upholding the highest standards of operation and compliance with regulations, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all customers.
