Protesters arrested as Spokane enforces emergency curfew during ICE demonstrations

Spokane, Washington has been thrust into a state of emergency as protesters defied Mayor Lisa Brown’s curfew, which was put into effect at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday until 5 a.m. Brown imposed the curfew in response to ICE protests that were taking place downtown from Boone Ave to Spokane Falls Blvd and Howard St to Division St, as well as Riverfront Park.
The protests were sparked by former Spokane City Councilman Ben Stuckart’s call to action for support in the detainment of a Venezuelan man seeking asylum. Stuckart, who recently became the legal guardian of the 21-year-old man, took to social media to rally support after the man was detained during an ICE check-in.
The Spokane Police Department and the county sheriff’s office are on the scene, deeming the gathering unlawful. Spokane County Commissioner Josh Kerns expressed his displeasure with the unrest, stating, “The unrest we have seen in the City of Spokane is unacceptable. I stand with the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who put themselves in harm’s way to protect lives, businesses, and public safety.”
Commissioner Kerns emphasized the importance of upholding First Amendment rights while condemning violence and destruction. He commended law enforcement for their efforts in maintaining peace and order during the tumultuous situation.
Mayor Lisa Brown also released a statement acknowledging the protests outside the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Spokane. She emphasized the city’s commitment to upholding everyone’s First Amendment rights while ensuring public safety.
Despite the peaceful intentions of the protests, several demonstrators have been arrested for “failure to disperse,” leading to the deployment of tear gas by the Spokane Police Department. The city continues to uphold the Keep Washington Working Act and address violations of municipal code while urging protesters to remain peaceful and safe.
The situation in Spokane serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions surrounding immigration policies and the need for peaceful dialogue and understanding. As the city grapples with the aftermath of the protests, unity and respect for differing opinions remain crucial in moving forward.
