Protestors storm Putin-backed parliament in Georgia breakaway region

Protesters stormed the parliament of the Russian-backed government in Abkhazia, Georgia, demanding the resignation of President Aslan Bzhania. The rioters used a truck to break through the metal gates surrounding the government building in Sukhumi, the capital city. They then climbed through windows, chanting in the halls, according to reports from East 2 West news outlet.

Russian officials have called it a “crisis situation” and advised citizens to avoid traveling to the region. Moscow has had a significant interest in Abkhazia since recognizing it, along with South Ossetia, as independent from Georgia after its 2008 invasion. The protesters initially opposed an investment agreement that would have allowed wealthy Russians to buy property in the region, displacing locals.

However, the protest has now evolved into a demand for President Bzhania to step down, according to opposition leader Temur Gulia. Bzhania, who has been in office since 2020, was not present during the parliament ambush. The presidential administration stated they were preparing to withdraw the investment agreement, but protesters insisted they would not disperse until Bzhania resigns.

If he were to step down, Bzhania would be the third leader to do so in Abkhazia since 2008. The region’s residents are wary of being overrun by wealthy Russians seeking vacation homes, especially in light of Western sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine. The majority of nations do not recognize Abkhazia as separate from Georgia, and Moscow’s recognition in 2008 sparked international condemnation.

The protest in Abkhazia comes amid growing tensions between Russia and the West, with Moscow’s aggressive actions in Ukraine prompting concern. The international community’s response to the 2008 invasion of Georgia set a precedent for Russia’s subsequent actions, leading to further conflicts in the region.

The situation in Abkhazia highlights the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region, where competing interests and historical grievances intersect. As the protesters continue their demands for change, the future of Abkhazia remains uncertain.
