Provinces need to do more to cut emissions, feds say, while announcing Canada’s new 2035 climate target
Canada has set a new target to cut carbon emissions by 45 to 50 per cent below 2005 levels by the year 2035. This announcement, made by the federal government, represents a slight advancement over the current target but falls short of the recommendations put forth by climate experts.
In simpler terms, Canada will need to reduce carbon emissions by at least 41 per cent in the next decade. This new target will be followed by a multi-year consultation process to develop a plan to achieve the goal, shaping climate policy for the next decade.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault emphasized the importance of collaboration with provinces to achieve these ambitious targets. He acknowledged that the federal government cannot accomplish this alone and highlighted the need for all provinces to work together towards a common goal.
Canada’s climate laws mandate the government to set new targets every five years, in alignment with international climate agreements. The Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act, passed in 2021, requires the government to release targets and strategies to achieve them, thereby solidifying Canadian climate action into law.
Earlier recommendations by climate experts suggested a more ambitious target of reducing emissions by 50 to 55 per cent below 2005 levels by 2035. However, the government’s newly announced target is slightly less ambitious, reflecting the challenges of gaining provincial support for climate initiatives.
Provinces like Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario have been resistant to federal climate action, with ongoing legal challenges against measures such as carbon pricing. Despite these obstacles, the government remains committed to driving business certainty and investment in clean technologies through these new emissions targets.
Setting ambitious targets involves a delicate balance of trade-offs, considering the impact on the economy, households, and policy implementation. While more aggressive targets may pose challenges, achieving sustained emissions reductions is crucial for long-term success in combating climate change.
Canada’s new emissions target aligns with the goals set by other countries under the Paris Agreement, signaling a collective effort to enhance climate ambition. By focusing on milestones and continuous progress towards 2050, Canada aims to make significant strides in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
