RCMP indicts men in alleged human trafficking operation that forced women to work
FAST FLOW, Sask. – Saskatchewan RCMP has charged two men in an alleged forced labor human trafficking operation.
Mounties say investigators heard of a woman who was forced to work long hours seven days a week at several restaurants across the county.
RCMP says when the woman was not working she was reportedly forced to stay in an unfinished concrete basement that was poorly lit and badly damaged by water.
Mounties say the woman was staying in Canada on a visitor’s permit and obtained a work permit after applying online for a job at a restaurant.
Police allege her employers threatened to take her license or call the police if she failed to keep to the demanding work schedule.
Mohammad Masum of Tisdale and Sohel Haider of Elrose have each been charged with human trafficking by police.
Masum also faces three counts of sexual assault.
The men will appear in court in Rosetown on July 13.
RCMP says more people may have been affected and investigations are continuing.
The woman has received support, including protection under the province’s Human Trafficking Act.
