CAIR panelist accuses Trump admin of using AI and antisemitism against free speech
The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently hosted a webinar titled “Know Your Rights with ICE on Campus,” where immigration attorney Hassan Ahmad accused the Trump administration of using antisemitism as a pretext to suppress freedom of speech. Ahmad also advised students to clear their phone data before traveling internationally to prevent immigration officials from accessing their information.
This webinar took place amidst a government initiative to combat antisemitism on college campuses following the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7 and the subsequent Israel-Hamas conflict. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been targeting foreign-born students involved in pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas demonstrations, alleging that they pose a threat to national security.
One prominent figure targeted by the administration was Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student who played a significant role in anti-Israel protests and advocated for divestment from Israel. Another student, Mohsen Mahdawi, was also arrested by DHS for his involvement in Palestinian activism.
During the webinar, Ahmad criticized the administration’s actions as racially motivated and aimed at silencing individuals who support Palestinian rights. He expressed concerns that the government may be using artificial intelligence to identify deportation targets, highlighting the broad language of certain laws that allow for such actions without proper oversight.
Ahmad also advised noncitizen students to safeguard their phone data when crossing borders to protect their privacy. He recommended deleting sensitive information before traveling and reinstalling apps from the cloud after reaching their destination.
