Read and watch Mark Carney’s full victory speech after winning Liberal leadership

Friends, we are at a critical moment in Canada’s history. The challenges we face are immense, but so too are the opportunities. As your new leader and prime minister-designate, I am committed to building a stronger Canada for everyone.

I want to thank my family, my supporters, and my fellow Liberals for their unwavering dedication and belief in me. Together, we can achieve great things.

I am humbled by the trust you have placed in me. I promise to work tirelessly to address the issues that matter most to Canadians. From the cost of living to the housing crisis, from the future of our young people to the threats we face from abroad, I am ready to lead with strength, compassion, and determination.

One of my first actions as prime minister will be to eliminate the consumer carbon tax, which is burdening families, farmers, and small- and medium-sized businesses. We will also halt the planned capital gains tax hike to incentivize risk-taking and reward success.

In the face of unjust tariffs imposed by President Trump, I will stand up for Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We will maintain our own tariffs until the Americans show us respect and commit to free and fair trade. Our resources, our water, our land – they are not for sale.

Canada is a nation of diversity, tolerance, and inclusivity. We must protect and promote our unique identity, including our French language and Indigenous peoples. These are not bargaining chips in any trade agreement – they are fundamental to who we are as Canadians.

I call on all Canadians to stand with me in this crucial moment. Together, we can overcome any challenge and build a brighter future for our country. Let us work together to create a stronger, more prosperous Canada for everyone.

Thank you, and let’s get to work. Vive le Canada!
