REAL ID: Lawmakers get real about deadline to travel domestically

The United States has had two decades to implement the REAL ID program, and starting today, passengers must have a REAL ID or another accepted form of identification, such as a passport, to travel domestically. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill spoke with Fox News Digital about how their home states have rolled out the final phase of REAL ID, as President Donald Trump’s administration has indicated that there will be no deadline extensions.

Many lawmakers, including Rep. Diana Harshbarger from Tennessee, emphasized the importance of getting a REAL ID in time for the deadline. Harshbarger mentioned that Tennessee implemented the REAL ID requirements a long time ago and urged people to act quickly to ensure they have the necessary identification to travel.

While some Republican lawmakers expressed concerns about constituents not being able to obtain a REAL ID in time, most agreed that REAL ID is a crucial step in enhancing national security. Sen. Rick Scott from Florida referred to REAL ID as a “better way to prove who you are and ensure there’s less fraud in the country.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville from Alabama stressed the importance of uniformity across all states in implementing REAL ID. He highlighted the need for consistency to ensure that all states follow the same guidelines and procedures.

However, not all states have had a smooth rollout of the REAL ID program. Kentucky lawmakers, including Senate Transportation Committee Chair Jimmy Higdon, requested a delay in REAL ID enforcement due to concerns about limited appointment availability and long lines for walk-ins. Despite this request, the Trump administration confirmed that states must comply with the May 7 deadline.

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis from New York expressed concerns about constituents who may not be aware of the REAL ID requirement and urged the government to be more proactive in spreading awareness. She emphasized the need for advertisements to inform people about the necessity of obtaining a REAL ID or traveling with a passport.

Sen. Eric Schmitt from Missouri raised questions about the necessity of REAL ID, stating that Congress has not thoroughly discussed the topic. Despite the passage of the REAL ID Act in 2005, Schmitt believes that there should be a debate on whether the program is truly needed.

On the other hand, Rep. Dale Strong from Alabama encouraged people to get the REAL ID, referring to it as a beneficial form of identification in the long run.
