Recount confirms Zach Churchill loss in Yarmouth riding

Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative candidate Nick Hilton emerged victorious in the Yarmouth riding after a judicial recount confirmed his win on Monday. His opponent, Liberal Leader Zach Churchill, who had held the seat since 2010, requested the recount after initial results showed a narrow 14-vote loss to Hilton. The recount ultimately revealed that Hilton had secured a 16-vote lead over Churchill.

The final results of the recount are as follows:
– Nick Hilton, PC: 3,663
– Zach Churchill, Liberal: 3,647
– Gillian Rowley, NDP: 208
– Adam Randall, Green: 62

Hilton expressed his excitement about being sworn in at Province House on Tuesday, stating, “I can’t thank the voters of Yarmouth enough for their support throughout the last month.” The Nova Scotia Liberal Party announced plans to address leadership changes on Tuesday, with Churchill having served as party leader since the summer of 2022.

In addition to the Yarmouth recount, a recount for the Annapolis electoral district is scheduled for Tuesday. In this district, PC candidate David Bowlby narrowly defeated Liberal incumbent Carman Kerr by seven votes. Automatic recounts are triggered when the margin between the top two candidates is less than 10 votes. The Annapolis recount is set to take place at 10 a.m. at the Annapolis Royal Firehall Auditorium.

The outcome of these recounts will have significant implications for the political landscape in Nova Scotia. As the dust settles on these closely contested races, both parties will be closely monitoring the results and planning their next steps in the aftermath of the provincial election.
