‘Red Light’ district Rep. AOC called out for ignoring crime cleanup on her turf

Residents and local activists in Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s district are praising a massive police crackdown on crime that has resulted in a significant decrease in criminal activity. The initiative, spearheaded by New York City Mayor Eric Adams, has seen a 25% drop in crime in the Queens neighborhood represented by Ocasio-Cortez and her Democratic colleague Rep. Grace Meng.
The operation, known as “Operation Restore Roosevelt,” involved over 200 NYPD officers and state troopers targeting the two-mile commercial strip of Roosevelt Avenue in Queens. This area had become a hub for illegal activities such as open-air prostitution, robberies, and illegal vending. The crackdown resulted in nearly 1,000 arrests, with more than 130 related to prostitution offenses. Additionally, inspections led to the closure of several buildings and vendors selling unlicensed goods.
Mayor Adams, a former police officer, emphasized the importance of increased law enforcement in improving public safety and restoring community confidence. He highlighted the success of the operation and pledged to maintain a strong police presence in the area. The community responded positively to the initiative, although some concerns remain, especially regarding issues like human trafficking and violent gangs.
Despite the positive outcomes, some local politicians, such as Hiram Monserrate, have pointed out that more work needs to be done. Monserrate highlighted the presence of brothels operating in the area, including one near public elementary schools. He emphasized the need for continued efforts to address these ongoing challenges.
While the operation has been lauded for its effectiveness in reducing crime, concerns persist among residents and activists. The community is hopeful that ongoing collaboration between local leaders, law enforcement, and city officials will lead to sustained improvements in public safety and quality of life in the neighborhood.
