Red Wings fire coach Derek Lalonde, hire Todd McLellan as replacement
The Detroit Red Wings made a significant coaching change on Thursday, firing Derek Lalonde and appointing Todd McLellan as his replacement. This decision, made by general manager Steve Yzerman, comes amidst a disappointing season for the team, with the Red Wings currently sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
Lalonde, who was in his third season with the Red Wings, had been brought in with the goal of leading the team back to the playoffs. However, despite the acquisition of veteran forward Patrick Kane, the team has struggled to find success on the ice. With only 21 wins in their first 34 games, the Red Wings are facing the possibility of missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive year.
In addition to Lalonde, associate coach Bob Boughner was also let go, with Trent Yawney joining McLellan’s coaching staff as an assistant. McLellan, a seasoned NHL coach with previous head coaching experience with teams like the San Jose Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, and Los Angeles Kings, signed a multiyear contract to lead the Red Wings.
Returning to Detroit, where he previously served as an assistant coach under Mike Babcock during the Red Wings’ 2008 championship season, McLellan brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of playoff success. Despite being let go by the Kings earlier this year, McLellan’s coaching credentials make him a strong candidate to lead the Red Wings back to their winning ways.
The coaching change in Detroit is just one of several that have occurred around the NHL this season, highlighting the competitive nature of the league. With the Red Wings hoping that McLellan can spark a turnaround for the team, all eyes will be on the new head coach as he looks to guide the team back on the path to success.
