Regina to host 2026 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships

Regina is set to host the prestigious 2026 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships, bringing together elite young Indigenous hockey players at the Co-operators Centre from May 2 to 9, 2026. Organized by the non-profit Aboriginal Sport Circle and sanctioned by Hockey Canada, the event features 16 teams – eight male and eight female – comprised of bantam and midget-aged Indigenous athletes.
This annual tournament has been a crucial platform for Indigenous sport development since its inception in 2002. The upcoming 2026 championships will mark the first time Saskatchewan has hosted the event since 2012, showcasing the province’s commitment to Indigenous sport. Fabian Head, third vice-chief of the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations, expressed excitement about the opportunity to highlight Indigenous talent and culture through sports.
The tournament will be hosted in partnership with Ochapowace Nation in southeastern Saskatchewan, emphasizing the community’s focus on youth development through sports and recreation. Chief Shelley Bear emphasized the importance of sports in building confidence, leadership, and resilience in young Indigenous people, stating that these opportunities not only create better athletes but also foster stronger communities and future leaders.
The NAHC typically generates over $1 million in economic impact per category for host communities, making it a significant event for Regina. Mayor Chad Bachynski welcomed the announcement, recognizing the tournament as a meaningful occasion that strengthens community bonds through the spirit of sport. The championship aligns with the province’s efforts to address the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action regarding sports and reconciliation.
Sandra Jackle, president and CEO of the Regina Hotel Association, highlighted the event as a remarkable celebration of sport and culture that enhances cultural connections and community pride nationwide. More information on schedules and tickets for the 2026 championships will be released closer to the event.
As the current event unfolds in Kamloops, B.C., the anticipation for the 2026 National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Regina continues to grow. Stay tuned for updates and be prepared to witness the best of Indigenous hockey talent on display at the Co-operators Centre in 2026.
