Fire forces 10 from homes in Amherst

A fire in a 10-unit apartment house in Amherst Sunday has forced 10 people from their homes.

Amherst firefighters were called to the two-storey building on Laplanche Street at about 6 p.m.

The Canadian Red Cross said in a release that the fire was contained to one unit of the building, but there was smoke or water damage to other units and power to the building had to be cut.

The Red Cross helped seven adults get emergency accommodations Sunday night. It said it will reassess the needs of the tenants Monday after its known when they can return to their apartments.

There were no reported injuries.
