Renewal of counter-drone authority, China crackdowns in last-minute government funding extension
Fox Flight Team Joins NJ Drone Unit in Search for UAPs
The Fox Flight Team has recently joined forces with a drone unit in the Northeast to search for Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs). This collaboration comes at a time when concerns about drone incursions are at an all-time high, with reports of drones spotted over the East Coast and near military bases like Picatinny Arsenal.
In a classified briefing for lawmakers, it was stated that nothing “nefarious” is happening in New Jersey skies. However, the drone phenomenon that started in New Jersey a month ago has led to over 6,000 tips being called in to the FBI. This has raised concerns about the need for better drone detection capabilities and coordination between agencies.
The continuing resolution (CR) currently being considered by Congress includes a provision reauthorizing a Department of Homeland Security program allowing agencies to coordinate and counter threats from drones. While this is a step in the right direction, many drone experts believe that more needs to be done to empower state and local law enforcement authorities to deal with unauthorized drones.
Brett Fedderson, chair of the Security Industry Association’s Counter-UAS Working Group, emphasized the importance of enabling state and local law enforcement to effectively address drone threats. He highlighted the need for technology like radar stations and camera stations to detect drones and mitigate potential risks.
The CR also includes provisions aimed at preventing U.S. investment in China and limiting access to high-level technologies that could be used for military purposes. Lawmakers have expressed concerns about Chinese investments in U.S. companies that may pose national security risks.
Overall, the collaboration between the Fox Flight Team and the NJ drone unit marks a significant step towards addressing the growing concerns around UAPs and unauthorized drone activity. As Congress works to pass legislation to avert a government shutdown and reauthorize drone interception and tracking capabilities, it is clear that more needs to be done to ensure the safety and security of our skies.
