US Election 2024

Rep. Green slammed for ‘shameful and egregious behavior’ as censure looms

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., has publicly scolded Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, for what he called “shameful and egregious behavior” during President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. Johnson accused Green of violating House rules deliberately, leading to Green being removed from the House chamber during the speech.

In a post on X, Speaker Johnson condemned Green’s actions, stating that he had “disgraced the institution of Congress” with his protest during Trump’s address. Johnson urged Democrats to join in voting for a resolution to censure Green for his behavior.

Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., introduced the resolution to censure Green, which has now advanced to a House-wide vote after surviving an attempt by Democrats to table it. The resolution is expected to be voted on today by the entire House.

Green, who knew that consequences would come from his actions, expressed his willingness to accept any punishment that resulted from his protest. He even took to X to remind his followers about the upcoming censure vote.

During Trump’s speech, Green began shouting after the president mentioned the 2024 election as a mandate for the GOP. Despite being warned by Speaker Johnson to take his seat, Green continued his protest, leading to his removal from the chamber by the Sergeant at Arms.

Green stated that his protest was aimed at highlighting the importance of saving Medicaid, a message that was also displayed on paddles used by other Democrats in a silent protest during the speech.

While Green was the only Democrat to actively disrupt the president’s speech, other Democrats showed their disapproval by holding up signs and some even walking out early.

If the resolution to censure Green passes, it will serve as a formal condemnation by the House, without carrying any specific consequences. Other lawmakers who have faced censure in the past include former Rep. Adam Schiff, former Rep. Jamaal Bowman, and Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

The resolution to censure Green was introduced by Rep. Newhouse shortly after Trump’s speech, and it has now made its way to a House-wide vote following the Democrats’ unsuccessful attempt to block it.
