Rep. Mikie Sherrill suggests third Trump impeachment as she campaigns to be next New Jersey governor

Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., has proposed the idea of impeaching President Donald Trump for a third time in order to prevent Republicans from gaining momentum following the 2026 midterms. This suggestion comes as she campaigns to become the next governor of New Jersey.

During a recent campaign event at Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company Station 34 in Manchester Township, Sherrill addressed her supporters and emphasized the importance of taking on tough fights. She mentioned that impeaching Trump for a third time could be necessary in order to challenge his agenda and prevent him from seeking a third term in office.

Sherrill, who was first elected to the U.S. House in the 2018 midterms, represents New Jersey’s 11th congressional district, which was traditionally considered a Republican stronghold. She gained attention for voting in favor of both of Trump’s impeachments during his first administration.

At the campaign event, Sherrill recounted her experience impeaching the president for the first time, expressing surprise at the idea of potentially doing it again. When an audience member suggested she should “do it again,” Sherrill responded with humor, hinting at the possibility of a “trifecta” impeachment.

The congresswoman highlighted the need to challenge Trump’s actions, citing examples of alleged high crimes and misdemeanors committed by the president. She emphasized the importance of holding the administration accountable for violating laws, subverting the justice system, and prioritizing personal interests over public service.

Sherrill also discussed the role of Democrat-led states in opposing Trump’s agenda and protecting democracy. She mentioned the importance of mobilizing and uniting people to counteract the president’s divisive tactics, as well as challenging his attempts to interfere with election systems.

In addition to Sherrill, other candidates in the Democrat gubernatorial primary in New Jersey include Rep. Josh Gottheimer, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, Sean Spiller, and Stephen Sweeney. The primary election is scheduled for June 10, as current Democrat Gov. Phil Murphy is term-limited.

As Sherrill continues her campaign to become the next governor of New Jersey, her proposal to impeach President Trump for a third time reflects her commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting democracy. Her stance on challenging the administration’s actions and preventing a Republican resurgence post-2026 midterms underscores her determination to advocate for accountability and transparency in government.
