Rep. Schweikert considers entering Arizona governor race for 2026

Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., is contemplating a potential run for Governor of Arizona, as confirmed by Fox News. With Rep. Andy Biggs and businesswoman Karrin Taylor Robson already in the race, the Republican primary is shaping up to be competitive. The eventual nominee will likely face off against Governor Katie Hobbs, a Democrat who won a closely contested race against Republican Kari Lake in 2022.

According to a statement from Schweikert’s spokesperson, Chris Baker, the Congressman has been approached by prominent Arizona conservatives and Republicans who are concerned about defeating Governor Hobbs. Schweikert is currently evaluating the possibility of entering the race and is expected to make a decision by the end of the month.

Karrin Taylor Robson, who previously sought the Republican nomination in 2022, has garnered significant support in her current campaign. With over 8,000 donors and President Donald Trump’s endorsement, Robson is seen as a formidable candidate in the race.

Both Andy Biggs and Robson have received endorsements from President Trump, who expressed his support for both candidates on social media. Biggs, who represents a deep-red district east of Phoenix, unexpectedly entered the gubernatorial race, creating a competitive primary battle.

If Schweikert decides to run for Governor, it will add another layer of intrigue to the Republican primary in Arizona’s First Congressional District. Cook Political Report has labeled both the gubernatorial and congressional races in Arizona as toss-ups, indicating the high level of competition in the state.

Despite the excitement surrounding the Republican primary, the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) has criticized the GOP candidates for their policy positions. DGA Communications Director Sam Newton highlighted concerns about healthcare and tariffs, contrasting Governor Hobbs’ bipartisan approach to governance.

As the race for Governor of Arizona heats up, all eyes will be on how the candidates differentiate themselves and appeal to voters. With Schweikert’s potential entry into the race, the dynamics of the primary could shift, making it a closely watched contest in the months ahead.
