Rep. Tom Emmer blasts Walz ahead of ‘sanctuary’ hearing

House Republican leadership has come out swinging against Democratic Gov. Tim Walz in anticipation of a high-profile congressional hearing on sanctuary city policies. The hearing, set to take place this week, will feature testimony from Walz, as well as Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
GOP Whip and Minnesota Rep. Tom Emmer did not hold back in his criticism of Walz, accusing him of being “pro-illegal alien” and “anti-Minnesotan.” Emmer wished Walz “good luck” before the hearing, but made it clear that he believes the governor’s immigration agenda is deeply flawed.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Emmer said, “If Tim Walz thinks he will be able to defend his abysmal record before Congress, then he’s even more of a buffoon than I thought. I only have one thing to say to Timmy as he heads to Washington this week: GOOD LUCK.”
Emmer further solidified his stance with a video titled “Protecting Illegals, Not Minnesotans: That’s the Walz Way,” in which he outlines his opposition to Walz’s immigration policies.
The upcoming hearing comes at a time of heightened tensions over immigration policy, with anti-ICE riots erupting in Los Angeles over the weekend. The Trump administration’s aggressive deportation efforts have also put sanctuary city policies under the microscope.
Sanctuary cities, while not legally defined, are known for their refusal to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) requests for information and detainers. This often means that illegal immigrants are less likely to face deportation in these jurisdictions.
House Oversight Chairman James Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, has been vocal in his criticism of sanctuary policies, arguing that they prioritize the protection of criminal illegal aliens over the safety of U.S. citizens. Comer pointed to the Biden administration’s handling of the border crisis as a contributing factor to the proliferation of sanctuary cities.
The hearing, scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. ET, is expected to be contentious, with Emmer and other Republicans likely to press the governors on their sanctuary city policies. Fox News Digital reached out to Walz for comment but did not receive a response.
