Republican lawmakers urge Trump to keep Ukraine mineral deal on the table

House Republicans are standing firm in their support of President Donald Trump’s proposed minerals deal with Ukraine, despite the public fallout during a recent Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Rep. Chip Roy of Texas expressed hope that Zelenskyy would reconsider the deal and acknowledge the President’s willingness to engage in business interests. Roy emphasized that such a deal would not only benefit Ukraine but also send a strong signal to Russia that America stands by its side.
Rep. Burgess Owens of Utah echoed Roy’s sentiments, stating that the minerals deal should still be considered as it would not only benefit the U.S. but also serve as a deterrent against potential attacks similar to those experienced in the past. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota agreed, commending Zelenskyy for his recent statements and suggesting that the deal could still be a viable option.
Despite the public disagreement during the meeting, Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina emphasized that President Trump acted appropriately and should not abandon the proposed deal. He criticized Zelenskyy for what he perceived as disrespect towards the President and Vice President JD Vance.
Rep. Darrell Issa of California speculated that Zelenskyy may regret not signing the deal and keeping quiet during the meeting. House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Harris of Maryland also voiced support for the deal, expressing disappointment that Ukraine did not take advantage of the opportunity.
In response to the fallout from the meeting, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready to return to the negotiating table and work towards a lasting peace under President Trump’s leadership. He acknowledged that the meeting did not go as planned but emphasized the importance of making amends and moving forward.
Overall, House Republicans are urging President Trump to keep the proposed minerals deal with Ukraine on the table, believing that it could benefit both countries and strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Ukraine. Despite the public disagreement, they remain optimistic that a resolution can be reached and are hopeful for a positive outcome in future negotiations.
