Republican looks to strip Dems who ‘stormed’ Newark ICE facility from committees

In a recent development, Republican lawmaker Rep. Buddy Carter from Georgia has taken a bold step to remove three Democratic colleagues from their House committees. The move comes after the Democrats, Reps. Robert Menendez, Bonnie Watson Coleman, and LaMonica McIver from New Jersey, were accused of “storming” a federal detention facility in defense of illegal immigrants.

The New Jersey Democrats were part of a group of protesters who entered the Delaney Hall Detention Center after the gates opened for a bus carrying detainees. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) condemned their actions, stating that they had put the safety of law enforcement and detainees at risk for what they called a political stunt.

Rep. Carter introduced a resolution to strip the three Democrats of their committee assignments. The lawmakers and their supporters argued that they were exercising their constitutional duty and accused ICE agents of assaulting McIver and Watson Coleman during the incident.

Carter’s resolution aims to remove Watson Coleman from the House Appropriations Committee, Menendez from the House Energy & Commerce Committee, and McIver from the House committees on Small Business and Homeland Security. He is currently seeking support from other House Republicans for the resolution.

In response to the incident, DHS emphasized that members of Congress are not above the law and cannot illegally break into detention facilities. The Democrats, on the other hand, refuted the Republican characterization of the event, calling it a political maneuver by the Trump administration.

Democratic leaders like House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stood by the trio, stating that concerns about the unsanctioned facility will not be silenced. He criticized the Trump administration for attempting to intimidate the public and called for accountability for the agents involved in the confrontation.
