Republicans blast ‘joke’ sentencing of Trump 10 days before swearing in

Republicans across the country expressed outrage at the sentencing of President-elect Trump on Friday, labeling it a “disgrace” and a “joke.” Trump was handed an unconditional discharge in New York City after being convicted last year of falsifying business records following a lengthy investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Despite Trump’s efforts to delay the sentencing, it proceeded just 10 days before his scheduled inauguration. The incoming president appeared virtually for the proceeding, during which Judge Juan Merchan declared, “After careful analysis, this court determined the only lawful sentence that permits entry of judgment of conviction is an unconditional discharge. At this time, I impose that sentence to cover all 34 counts.”

Senator Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., took to social media to express her disbelief, stating, “What a joke and a disgrace.” Similarly, Rep. Rudy Yakym, R-Ind., condemned the sentencing, asserting, “Today’s sentencing is an unfortunate reminder that Democrats will stop at nothing, including weaponizing the justice system to try and destroy President Trump. Rest assured, their efforts have and will continue to fail. America’s comeback begins in 10 days.”

The backlash from Republicans underscores the deep political divide surrounding Trump’s legal troubles and the perception of bias in the justice system. Many on the right see the case as politically motivated, aimed at undermining the former president’s legacy and influence.

As the nation awaits Trump’s next steps in response to the sentencing, the political landscape remains tense and polarized. The outcome of this high-profile case is sure to reverberate through the halls of power for years to come.
