Republicans file 12 Pennsylvania lawsuits in ‘aggressive’ push to end recount
Senior Republican Party officials have announced their plans to file 12 lawsuits in Pennsylvania in order to defend their recent pickup in the closely watched Senate race. The GOP is standing behind Republican candidate Dave McCormick, who secured a victory over three-term incumbent Democrat Sen. Bob Casey. Despite Casey’s refusal to concede defeat and his push for a statewide recount, the Republican Party is determined to protect McCormick’s win.
The lawsuits, filed in four counties across Pennsylvania, are challenging the counting of mail-in ballots with incorrect or missing dates, in accordance with a recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling. The GOP has faced resistance from some county Democratic leaders, particularly in Philadelphia, Bucks County, Center County, and Delaware County. These areas have been the focus of the party’s initial wave of legal challenges.
Republican officials have criticized the defiance from Democratic officials, accusing them of breaking the law and vowing to hold them accountable. In addition to the 12 lawsuits already filed, the GOP plans to submit eight more court challenges to ensure that only legal votes are counted and McCormick’s victory is upheld.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court had previously ruled that mail-in ballots lacking required signatures or dates should not be included in the official results. However, Democratic officials in Philadelphia and other parts of the state have not followed this directive, prompting the Republican Party to take legal action.
Party Chair Michael Whatley emphasized the importance of protecting McCormick’s Senate seat and pledged to maintain an aggressive legal posture until the election is certified in Pennsylvania. He denounced the conduct of Democratic officials as corrupt and despicable, and vowed to continue fighting back against it.
McCormick currently holds a lead of approximately 17,000 votes, within the 0.5% threshold required for an automatic recount in Pennsylvania. Despite the ongoing recount process, RNC officials do not believe that the outcome will change significantly. They have criticized the recount as a waste of taxpayer money, citing past instances where statewide recounts in Pennsylvania resulted in minimal vote changes.
The Republican Party has deployed hundreds of attorneys and observers to monitor the recount process in every county in Pennsylvania, ensuring that it is conducted fairly and transparently. Party officials also raised concerns about the cost of the recount and its potential to erode voter confidence in the election system.
Pennsylvania Republican Party chair Lawrence Tabas called on the Casey campaign to end the recount, citing the political ramifications and the need to declare McCormick the winner. He emphasized that there is no mathematical path for Casey to overturn McCormick’s victory and urged an end to what he described as electioneering.
