US Election 2024

Republicans projected to keep control of House as Trump prepares to implement agenda

Republicans are projected to maintain their majority in the House of Representatives, according to the Fox News Decision Desk. The exact number of seats they will hold hinges on the outcome in a few remaining districts. Mike Johnson, who became Speaker last year after a fierce leadership battle, is expected to continue serving as the 56th Speaker.

Despite a tumultuous term for the House GOP, marked by internal strife over government spending and the unprecedented removal of a House Speaker, Republicans have managed to retain control. The road to victory seemed bleak in October 2023 when the party was in disarray following the ousting of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy. However, the tables turned when Democrats faced their own leadership crisis, with progressives urging President Biden to withdraw from the race after a lackluster debate performance against former President Trump.

House Republicans’ chances of maintaining the majority were bolstered by Vice President Kamala Harris stepping in for Biden, injecting enthusiasm and resources into their campaign. However, it wasn’t enough to secure victory for Democrats in the November elections.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries acknowledged that the battle for control would be decided in approximately 40 to 45 closely contested races. He emphasized that only a small percentage of seats, about 10%, were truly competitive battlegrounds. The remaining districts were split evenly between Republican and Democratic-held seats, making the fight for control intense and crucial.

The Club for Growth, a conservative political group, poured $5 million into key House races as the GOP braced for a challenging election season. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise revealed that efforts were focused on supporting Republican incumbents in tough races and backing challengers with a real chance of flipping Democrat-held seats.
