Quebec mom who needs adapted vehicle for son inspires community to raise money to buy one

A mother’s love knows no bounds, especially when it comes to ensuring her child’s well-being. Mélanie Bouchard, a single mom of four, has been facing challenges due to car troubles and the high cost of an adapted vehicle for her 13-year-old son, William, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Despite the obstacles, she is determined to provide her son with the best care possible, including trips to specialists across the province.

The community in Quebec has rallied around Mélanie and William, offering their support to make their travels more accessible. A fundraising campaign in the Saguenay region is underway to purchase an adapted vehicle that will make medical appointments and outings to restaurants, campsites, movies, and amusement parks easier for the family.

One local business owner, Mylène Aubry, was deeply moved by Mélanie and William’s story and decided to organize a raffle to raise funds for the adapted vehicle. With two snowmobiles up for grabs, the community has come together to support the cause. Aubry, co-owner of Relais La Chapelle restaurant and Camping Au Soleil Levant campground, hopes that the raffle will make a difference in the lives of this deserving family.

Steven Laperrière, a disability rights activist, emphasizes the importance of initiatives like these in helping families afford the high cost of adapted vehicles. With the added expenses of vehicle adaptations, the financial burden can be overwhelming for families like Mélanie’s. Organizations like the Chicoutimi Lions Club are stepping in to help purchase the adapted vehicle, easing some of the financial strain on the family.

Tickets for the raffle are available at Relais La Chapelle restaurant, with the draw scheduled for March 29. The funds raised will not only support the purchase of the adapted vehicle but also benefit the Caribou-Conscrits snowmobile club. The community’s generosity and support are providing hope and relief to Mélanie and William, who face daily challenges but continue to embrace life with courage and resilience.

As Mélanie strives to give William the best possible experiences and memories, she remains hopeful and focused on the positive moments they share together. Despite the uncertainties that lie ahead, she is determined to make the most of every day with her beloved son, cherishing the time they have together and creating lasting memories that will stay with them forever.
