Rex the dog was trapped on icy Lake St. Clair — but the Lakeshore, Ont., community rallied to save him
Rex the dog’s harrowing experience of being trapped on the ice of Lake St. Clair in Lakeshore, Ont. for 28 long hours captured the hearts of the community. The Bondy family, who owns Rex, expressed their overwhelming gratitude for the outpouring of support that led to his safe return home.
The ordeal began when Anthony Bondy noticed that Rex and Charlie, the family’s two dogs, were missing. After a search, he spotted Rex far out on the ice, camouflaged against the snow. Concerned about the thinning ice due to a recent thaw, Anthony reached out to the Lakeshore Fire Department for help.
Despite efforts to locate Rex, including calls to various agencies and a community-wide search initiated through social media, Rex remained stranded on the frozen lake as night fell. Jennifer Bondy placed a family sweater and dog food on the ice, hoping to lure Rex back to shore.
As hope started to wane, a glimmer of light appeared in the form of Jessie Schouten from Lucky K-9, who arrived with a dog whistle to help guide Rex back. With the assistance of Matt Leavoy and Steve Coulter, who braved the icy waters on a snowmobile and in float suits, Rex was finally rescued and reunited with his family.
The heartwarming reunion was captured by a drone operated by Windsor photographer Fly with Rye, showcasing the community’s unwavering support and determination to bring Rex back home. Tears of joy flowed as Rex was safely returned to his family, unharmed and grateful for the love and care he received during his ordeal.
For the Bondy family, the miraculous rescue of Rex served as a reminder of the power of community and the kindness of strangers.
