Riley Leonard returns from injury to lead Notre Dame to national championship game in CFP win vs Penn State

Notre Dame is heading to the first College Football Playoff National Championship game of the expanded format era after a thrilling 27-24 comeback win over Penn State in the Orange Bowl on Thursday. Kicker Mitch Jeter sealed the victory with a game-winning 41-yard field goal in a back-and-forth battle between the two storied programs.

The Fighting Irish’s victory was made even more impressive by quarterback Riley Leonard’s resilience. Leonard had to leave the game in the second quarter due to an injury, forcing backup Steve Angeli into action. Despite being down 10-0 at that point, Angeli helped Notre Dame get on the scoreboard with a field goal drive, going into halftime trailing 10-3.

However, Leonard returned in the second half and led a touchdown drive to tie the game. The second half saw both teams trading scores in a competitive battle, with Leonard having a chance to lead a go-ahead drive in the final minutes. Unfortunately, a key sack by the Penn State defense forced a Notre Dame punt, setting up a tense finish.

With a chance to lead a game-winning drive, Penn State quarterback Allar threw an interception, giving Leonard and the Irish another opportunity. Leonard capitalized on the chance, leading the final drive that set up Jeter’s game-winning field goal.

“I just trusted in Jesus,” Leonard said in a postgame interview, highlighting his faith and determination throughout the game. Notre Dame’s journey to the championship game has been nothing short of remarkable, especially coming off a historic win against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl just one day after a tragic terrorist attack.

The Irish will now await the winner of the Cotton Bowl matchup between Ohio State and Texas, as they continue their quest for a national title. Coach Marcus Freeman praised Leonard’s competitive spirit and leadership, emphasizing the honor of being part of such a special team.
