Ritchie Torres blasts far-left Democrats for Trump win
In a recent Twitter post, Democratic congressman Ritchie Torres from New York made headlines by placing the blame for President-elect Trump’s victory on progressives within his own party. Torres argued that far-left causes have actually alienated certain voters, particularly minority communities.
Torres specifically pointed fingers at pro-Palestinian protests and the movement to defund the police as contributing factors to the Democratic Party losing support among Latinos, Blacks, Asians, and Jews. He criticized the far-left for promoting ideas like ‘Defund the Police’ and ‘From the River to the Sea’ which he believes have turned away working-class voters.
The aftermath of the 2024 election revealed that Vice President Harris had less favorability among Latino and Hispanic voters compared to President Biden in 2020. According to a Fox News Voter Analysis, Biden received 63% of Latino support in 2020, while Harris only garnered 54% in 2024. Additionally, support for Trump among Latino and Hispanic voters increased from 35% in 2020 to 41% in 2024.
The shift in support towards Trump among minority communities came shortly after a controversial incident at a Trump campaign rally where comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made a derogatory joke about Puerto Rico. Despite efforts by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to sway Latino voters away from Trump following the incident, the damage had already been done.
Torres emphasized the need for the Democratic Party to focus on issues that resonate with a broader base of voters rather than pandering to the far-left ideologies that are more representative of social media platforms like Twitter, Twitch, and TikTok. He highlighted the disconnect between the ivory-towered views of the far left and the realities faced by working-class Americans.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that the Democratic Party must address internal divisions and refocus its messaging to appeal to a wider range of voters. Torres’ comments serve as a reminder that unity within the party is essential for future electoral success.
