Romanchuk takes New York Marathon men’s wheelchair title, Canada’s Cassidy 10th
Marcel Hug’s Dominance at New York Marathon Comes to an End
Marcel Hug’s incredible three-year streak as the New York Marathon men’s wheelchair champion has finally been broken, as Daniel Romanchuk emerged victorious in this year’s race on Sunday.
The Swiss star, known for his unparalleled success in marathons, had previously won 16 consecutive races, including a gold medal at the Paris Paralympics earlier this year.
However, Hug’s quest for another title was thwarted when his wheelchair was accidentally clipped by a competitor during the first 15 miles of the race. This unfortunate incident caused him to fall behind, ultimately leading to his defeat.
As the race progressed, a fierce battle ensued between Romanchuk, David Weir, and Tomoki Suzuki, with the trio vying for the top spot. In a thrilling finish, the three athletes entered the last mile neck and neck, separated by mere seconds.
Ultimately, it was Romanchuk who crossed the finish line first, completing the marathon in an impressive time of one hour, 36 minutes, and 31 seconds. This victory marked Romanchuk’s third win at the prestigious event, having previously triumphed in 2018 and 2019.
Meanwhile, Josh Cassidy distinguished himself as the top Canadian finisher, achieving a commendable time of 1:49:34.
In the women’s wheelchair race, Susannah Scaroni emerged victorious, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination on the challenging course.
With Romanchuk’s triumph signaling the end of Hug’s reign, fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming races and the emergence of new contenders in the world of wheelchair marathon racing.
