Rubbing beef fat on your face is new viral skincare trend: ‘Bigger than ever’

Beef tallow is making waves in the skincare world as a natural alternative to traditional products. This simple ingredient, made from the fat surrounding a cow’s kidneys, has gained popularity on social media and is being used as a moisturizer in balms.

Hearth and Homestead, a natural skincare company in Virginia, has seen a surge in demand for their tallow balm product. Founder Lily Wilmoth explained that the balm is made from 100% grass-fed beef suet, sourced from farms across the country. The fat is processed into a creamy butter consistency and blended with herb-infused olive oil before being melted, whipped, cooled, and jarred.

According to Wilmoth, beef tallow is rich in nutrients like vitamins D and A, making it beneficial for the skin. The balm acts as a moisturizer that helps to trap water in the skin, leaving it smooth and soft. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins that help maintain the skin’s health and protect it from oxidative stress.

While beef tallow may not be suitable for everyone, dermatologists generally agree that it is well-tolerated by most skin types. However, those with oily or sensitive skin may find it to be too heavy or greasy. It’s important to do a patch test before using tallow products liberally on the skin.

Dr. Tiina Meder, a cosmetic safety expert and dermatologist, raised concerns about the hype around beef tallow. She suggested that there are better options available in the market that are more similar to human skin lipids. Some of the lipids found in beef tallow can be pro-inflammatory and sensitizing to the skin.

In conclusion, while beef tallow may offer benefits for some individuals, it may not be the ideal choice for everyone. It’s essential to consider your skin type and do a patch test before incorporating tallow products into your skincare routine. Ultimately, there are many other moisturizers available that may be better suited to your skin’s needs.
