Russia’s largest draft in 14 years amid Ukraine conflict tensions

Russia has initiated its largest military draft in 14 years, calling up 160,000 men as part of the country’s bi-annual conscription drive. This move comes amidst reports indicating that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for a spring assault on Ukraine, despite ongoing peace negotiations to end the three-year war.

The legislation states that citizens aged 18 to 30 will be called up for mandatory military service through June 15. This marks the largest conscription campaign since spring 2011, when 200,000 men were called up for service. Last year, 150,000 men were called, following 134,500 in 2022.

The Kremlin and Defense Ministry have insisted that the latest conscripts are not being sent into combat and that the draft is unrelated to the war in Ukraine. Russian authorities claim that troops deployed to Ukraine are volunteers who signed contracts with the military. However, some draftees were involved in fighting and were taken prisoners when the Ukrainian military launched an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August.

President Donald Trump has been actively trying to secure a ceasefire deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but negotiations have been challenging. The U.S. has struggled to secure an immediate 30-day ceasefire, despite Moscow’s agreement “in principle.” Talks attempting to broker a ceasefire deal appear to have stalled, with the U.S. facing difficulties in its efforts.

Military analysts have suggested that the Kremlin is preparing a six- to nine-month offensive across the Ukrainian front, potentially stretching over 1,000 kilometers. Possible targets include Sumy, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhya oblasts, as well as the Kursk Oblast. The aim of the offensive is to maximize pressure on Ukraine and strengthen the Kremlin’s negotiating position in ceasefire talks.

Former DIA intelligence officer Rebekah Koffler, who specializes in Russia’s war-fighting strategy and Putin’s thinking, believes that Putin’s goal with the conscription drive is to prolong the fighting. She stated that there is no ceasefire or peace plan between Russia and Ukraine to be had and that Putin’s goal is to compel Ukraine to capitulate.

Despite efforts to secure a peace deal, Putin seems prepared for a long, protracted conflict. He wants Russian forces to be ready to fight until the last Ukrainian and the last missile in the NATO arsenal. Putin is also considering the possibility of a direct kinetic war with NATO if forces are deployed into the theater in Ukraine.

In conclusion, Russia’s largest military draft in 14 years signals escalating tensions and the potential for further conflict in Ukraine. The situation remains complex, with ongoing peace negotiations and the threat of a spring assault looming. The international community will need to closely monitor developments in the region as the situation continues to unfold.
